Ronnie Franklin, the 20-year-old McKinleyville man who was struck by a suspected drunk driver on Wednesday night while working in a Caltrans construction zone in Eureka, died Saturday afternoon at U.C. Davis Medical Center due to complications from emergency surgery.
Many members of Franklin’s family and friends made the trip to Sacramento to be near him as he underwent multiple surgeries. A pair of fundraisers, here and here, were established to support the family financially. After a series of medical ups and downs, Franklin suffered a setback and went into a coma before passing away, according to his aunt, Melissa Hall.
The driver who allegedly struck Franklin, 26-year-old Selah Town of Carlotta, was on probation for a recent DUI conviction, according to court records. Criminal charges for Wednesday’s incident had not yet been filed by Friday. She was released on a $25,000 bail, according to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.
Franklin’s family submitted the following statement:

All the prayers have been felt from near and far — Ronnie’s MULTIPLE care teams have been diligently attending, watching and caring for him. 
Unfortunately, due to complications from further necessary surgeries to maintain the stability of multiple life-threatening injuries sustained from being crushed by this drunk driver, Ronnie has succumbed to his injuries. 
Ronnie was surrounded by his  entire family that love him dearly: his loving girlfriend who meant the world to him and never left his side;  her wonderful family who thought the world of him; his amazing circle of best buddies; and the love and prayers being sent from near and far when he passed. Please continue to keep them all in your prayers.

Ronnie Joe was a “stargazer” from the moment he entered this world. There is a new star in the sky that will forever be looking down and reminding us to say “I LOVE YOU.”
