Lone Samurai
A shipwrecked samurai fights a cannibal tribe on a tropical island. Rather disappointing. There’s some attempt to be artsy. The samurai writes poems about killing. There’s some artsy shots. Then there’s some graphic torture as the cannibals dismember their prisoners. They give the samurai some psychedelic blood to drink which empowers him to break free. Then he kills the whole tribe but it’s only guys in bone masks wielding spears and macuahuitls.
The lead is Shogen who trained for 3 weeks to prepare but needed more like 3 years, or 30 even. He moves poorly and unconvincingly, cutting and slashing way off target with little intention. There’s a hint of complexity in some of the fights. Many are digitally enhanced for decapitations or limb removal: yayan Ruhian plays an elder and he completely outclasses everyone else with his Silat skills. But Shogen can barely wield a katana and his hits lack slicing impact. There’s many clear misses in his kills, cuts way to wide to be convincing. So disappointing.
