The Poet Empress by Shen Tao
That was really good for a first book. Peasant girl Wei Yin manages to get picked to be a concubine in the soon to be emperor's court during a nationwide hunt. Wei Yin really only hoped to get a bit more food for the village and maybe an education for her brother Bao. Instead, she becomes the number one to a very cruel royal son and finds her involved in court intrigues beyond her imagination.
Wei Yin's story is not a happy one. But the book is a really fun read. A good twist on the Asian emperor stories. Nice use of magic. Very enjoyable.
