Shroud by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Mr. Tchaikovsky loves to invent new life forms and then tell stories about how they interact with humans. Shroud is a moon of a gas giant in some far flung solar system. It only comes to the attention of a colony ship when it seems there might be some sort of life hidden beneath a thick cloud layer, existing in a punishing gravity. A group of scientists explores the planet from orbit, earning their ability to stay out of the sleep pods by showing results. Disaster strikes and a few member of the crew find themselves on the surface of Shroud, fighting to stay alive.
It is a pretty fun read. Adrian likes to have discussion about the curious actions of the other species and loves to build words where it doesn't seem possible to build worlds.
If he writes it, I'll read it. Except for the Apt series.

As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
