Hijacking this thread to rant about the massive reconstruction project happening at my mom's house. Tara & Bri plan to move in there later this year, which prompted Stacy to undertake a massive cleaning and reconstruction project. I'm very grateful she's taken that on. Every time I tried to clean, I got stuck in some nostalgic rabbit hole as some random object triggered memories of my youth.
The remodel involves redoing the kitchen, den, and downstairs bathroom, as well as all the windows. Previously, as I mentioned elsewhere here I think, we took up the carpets to reveal beautiful red oak floors. I asked my mom about it and she said 'yes, we put to carpet down to protect that.' We also repainted and stripped the mildly racist wallpaper with a black servant holding up a parasol over a possibly British couple lounging by a fountain, and the psychedelic orange wall paper with gold foil. Now it's all white.
The windows have been replaced to bring them up to code (double paned is required in svale now, known as the land of codes). The new frames are solid white oak with solid brassy hasps. I love them. But the window people fugged up. We asked for several windows to be widened. They widened the frames but the windows were the same size. So stupid. We're getting a refund on those that weren't widened, but only after a long debate with the company. They suck. The front window and sliding glass door are nice tho.
The kitchen/den is completely gutted, stripped to the frame. The plumbing and electrical has been redone and upgraded and I'm posting this here today to celebrate that we passed the city inspection. The new dry wall goes up next.
It's very surreal there now. I never know what power is working, but I'm good at working around it all.
It's going to be amazing when it's done. That's our mantra.
