The show was fine - packed. It was the first ‘real’ show since the Mo reopened (it’s been dark all summer for restoration). The downside was that it was a lot of new crew because corporate came in an laid down a lot of new policies, plus there was no coverage for staff during the shutdown so many moved on, and a few old timers got the boot. Babs, my rm guru, who built the small show model, its thinking about calling it. We started working together in 1989 at the Warfield - those were within my AFS years and I often went there after work for dinner and a show, barting in and out - a blurry time in my life. But I saw a ton of music. Then there was the reopening of the Fillmore in 94 and the change in management of the Warfield jn 2008 from AEG (Alex E Graham) to Goldenvoice. I’ve remained loyal to Babs and her crew throughout this 36 year run. She’s now in her 70s and I think she may be looking for a way to end it. It will be the end of an era.
At one point, I went out into the crowd for a break. The Mo staff chided me like they do about the cheese heads being my peeps. I denied it, like I do, but then immediately bumped into some close friends, Alex & Yuyu, of Kindrugs. My peeps. People often mix up Alex and me because we’re both Asian, just like I get mistaken for SCI guitarist Kang a lot. A drunk blonde (grey) cheesehead chick came up to us and wanted to know how we were related. We think she had some yellow fever.
SCI covered the Dead’s The Other One, which was ok, and encored with the Talking Head’s This might be the place. It was a good night musically.
If Babs calls it quits, I will have to be present at that final show.
