Legs broken...
Apparently, I underestimated when the lull between lunch and dinner service would occur. When I got the gig, I was there on a Monday eve, ~6pm, and there were maybe 10-15 people out on the patio. I figured weekend lunch would be busier, but the place was nearly full from 2pm to about 4:45pm and then resurged about an hour later. I only played for an hour and, as a trial, wanted to keep it simple, so we didn't bring a PA, but there was so much chatter I really had to try hard to be heard just introducing songs. I had Aaron, another open mic regular, help me on about 1/3 my set. The songs where he joined were much better, partially because of the extra volume. The third third of my set I played thru a mini-amp, so at least the guitar could be heard if not the vocals...
It was a beautiful day to be outside in a shaded patio.
Our set:
— Me solo (Std tuning)
- Act Natural (Margaret Glaspy)
- Dinky Dog the Demon Master (Spot 1019)
- Wasn’t Born to Follow (The Byrds)
- Caesar’s Revenge (Marseille Figs) - kid friendly version
- California (The Rentals - from a demo tape)
- The Waiting (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) - I successfully played the Mike Campbell guitar parts with a harmonica. It's fun getting everyone to join in on the "yeah yeahs"
— duo w/Aaron
- Underneath the Bunker (R.E.M.)
- Mr. Spaceman (The Byrds)
- California Stars (Billy Bragg & Wilco)
- Rain (The Beatles)
- Here Comes Your Man(do) (Pixies) - I sang backup and played mandolin
(switch to DADAAE guitar)
- Find Your Place in the Sun (Bashi Bazouks)
— Me solo (DADAAE tuning)
- When Silence Was Golden (David Schnaufer)
- By this River (Brian Eno) - accompanied myself with a looper/amp
- Museum of Idiots (They Might Be Giants)
- Call & Answer (Bare Naked Ladies) - my other cohort couldn't make it so it was missing the harmonies
- Flowers (Camper van Beethoven) - ditto
Encore (w/Aaron)
- Where the Hell is Bill? (Camper van Beethoven) - great sing-along...
We got a $1 tip from a guy from Millbrae. The food (a brat w/saurkraut followed by an apfle schnitzel) was excellent and I enjoyed 2 grapefruit radlers after the show.
We were invited back. Next time we'll bring a PA.
