I'm not sure what good him taking the trust would have done. Even if he could get a lawyer to change it, which seems unlikely to me, a notary would have to come to the house for your mother's signature. Aren't there other copies anyway? I think the trustee who takes over upon her death is supposed to have a copy.
Maybe it's time to make copies of all the legal papers. Couldn't hurt. And secure the plates so Yetis don't steal them.
