Carlos Santana has canceled some of his upcoming tour dates to undergo a “corrective procedure” for his back.
The news coincides with a contentious performance by the Grammy-winning guitarist at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on Tuesday, Aug. 27, during which the 77-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician who was an integral part of the San Francisco music scene criticized the hometown crowd for its lack of energy.
“It feels like we are at the old people’s home,” Santana told the crowd of 17,000, according to a San Jose Mercury News concert review.
Santana, known for classics like “Black Magic Woman,” “Evil Ways” and “Smooth,” delivered a nearly two-hour set front-loaded with his greatest hits before co-headliners Counting Crows took the stage. He performed seated for much of the show, likely due to his persistent back issues.
As a result of his upcoming medical procedure, Santana has canceled shows in Phoenix and Albuquerque as well as a portion of his residency at the House of Blues Las Vegas. Ticketmaster will automatically refund tickets for these dates.
Despite these cancellations, Santana still planned to perform in San Diego on Friday, Aug. 30, and at the Fool in Love festival near Los Angeles on Saturday, Aug. 31.
“Carlos looks forward to seeing everyone post-procedure,” said a statement from his representatives posted Tuesday on social media, noting his return to the stage is expected to be at the House of Blues Las Vegas on Oct. 30.
