So yeah, I posted about the call I was on - right in the middle of my break. I was on the concourse watching and the call was close to the lower concourse - several came on the call so I just stood back and did crowd control. Great view of the show.
Carlos, man. Still fire. He has such a signature approach to his screeching guitar riffs. Still got it. Saw his bassist & drummer do a jam. Word is Carlos injured his back (he was sitting through his performance) and is cancelling the rest of his tour. It was good to see him.
Older, clean crowd. 17K (SLA holds 22K?) Felt fairly full. Lots of walkers. Took a new nurse on walkabout. She just got married and had fresh henna - Nisha - she's Indian - so we had a nice walkabout. She hadn't been out back so I showed her the asshole of SLA (the dump burners) and we watched a gorgeous sunset from that vantage.
I worked table service for most of it. Ran into several friends in the audience, including my two DJ friends from the Cruz. They just separated after 27 years of marriage (on their anniversary!) - ugly break. Heard both sides. Drama. Weirded me out. I luv them both and don't want to take a side. Got selfies with both of them.
Ran into someone from the wulin and I was embarrassed because I couldn't pull up his name out of context (it's Ron - he's one of Tomizaki's peeps - good guy and always takes care of me at that event).
Had a great night. Connected with a lot of RMers that were surprisingly cool including someone who I've known but didn't know she was a PhD in physics and worked on the Hardrian (sp?) accelerator before it became that. Also a young Stanford kid named Max who is part of a lion dance club there.
Got a lot of mileage out of my pic with Carlos from lion dancing with the Grateful Dead.
Afterwards, four of us hit up the Sports Page, the local nearby. I used to hit it after shows back in the late 80s. Hadn't been back in maybe a quarter century. Twas Saira, Meghan, and the other Gene. Super fun to unwind afterwards with them. I've watched them all rise up in RM from the beginning. Meghan will finish nursing school in NYC in December. Saira is almost done with fire & paramed training. I'm hoping to recruit Gene into JM for the upcoming Monterey gigs.
We closed the Sports Page and I was home by 2. I'm enjoying some ramen, tinned eel, and finishing a bottle of Toki.
My folks' amazing tube-driven Magnavox is doing a Carpenter/Roan jam right now. They own this 2024 summer. Flashbacks to OSL.
Need to head back to the Cruz in 6 hours for an Immortal telemeeting (plus our property manager will be checking out our neighbor's roof). I should get some sleep before I travel...
This show was much more interesting than I thought it would be. That last flash of MercNRet.
You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling...
Ok, goodnight and JAH bless.
