At 6:20 tonight, as I was about to sit down to some writing, this text appears:
It’s from tg, giver of Remain in Light tickets. How could I even say no?
A few minutes later, I meet up with tg at Copal, a Oaxacan restaurant I’ve been meaning to try. I don’t see him at first because he’s tucked in the back of a table filled with 4 women (!) two of whom are having birthdays (!!). Next thing I know, I’m dancing in the Quarry to one of my top ten fav albums again, in the priority section.
I bump into two friends in the crowd, a yoga classmate who has spent significant time with SF Zen (we had just chatted a bit this morning as we left class) & and the one and only Peggy O, who was fresh from taking her daughter to the Sphere (she texted me afterward to say ‘WOW Best show I’ve seen in AGES). And it was great.
It’s a 10 pieces now (when I saw Turkuaz they were a 12 piece). Some Turkuaz members evolved into Cool Cool Cool, which was the backing band tonight. There was supposed to be two female Singers but only Sammi Garrett performed. A second female came out for the final bow and I think that was Shira Elias, the other female. Maybe she was unable to perform or something. Sammi was great nevertheless - I really enjoyed her approach to these Talking Head classics.
The Quarry show was tighter, more high energy. Belew still has his chops, dude can shred. Harrison is solid, although one of his jams on keys got out of hand.
It was super fun, a total surprise evening that went from watching TV, writing, and eating cheese sammiches to an outrageously delightful dance concert, a gear switch that happened in a few heartbeats.
Thanks again, tg!
Quote:Hey, are you in SC tonight? I just came up with a spare ticket for Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew (talking heads) at the UCSC quarry. Music starts at 7pm
