Pixar does Carrie. I couldn't shake the menstruation metaphors (in either film). Some of the 'be yourself' themes seemed especially strong.
I thought it was too frenetic in the beginning, but it fell into a rhythm soon enough. Then it got very predictable. Then it surprised me with the kaiju spin. Then it got predictable again. It did get a giggle out of me. It bordered on some feels. There were some good subtle Chinese culture details, like the tiger mom/panda dad bit. I wonder if this will get approved for PRC. It has potential there I think.
I'm glad I didn't try to review it for KFM. That would've been a total miss. There's a flash of Tai Chi, and James Hong (our KFTC 10 year gala MC) with a daoist coin sword, and that's it. It would've been a stretch.
It was nice to see a Disney mother/daughter film because moms usually die (think Bambi, Snow White, Cinderella...) I wonder what my family will think of this.
