I just rewatched The Matrix in case I do that screener on Monday. It all depends on how I'm feeling and where my workload is.
It holds up surprisingly well. Some things like the Nokia flip phones and the green CRT blinking computer fonts are dated and it moves much more slowly than I remembered, but the action scenes poached from Hong Kong cinema still shine. Yuen Woo Ping did some fine work and the ballistic gunplay was so John Woo, right down to the copter crash.
I remember thinking it was more metaphoric and I hoped now that Lana has transitioned, there would be more insight into that as part of the metaphor. But no. It's more of a great auctioneer.
I forgot about the sentinel tentacles. Those were great.
Keanu is solid in what he does. I didn't appreciate that then as much as I do now. Carrie-Anne is stunning. Lawrence is okay, not as mystical as I remember. And Hugo is way over the top, on the verge of that not working.
But it's still enjoyable for what it is.
