Black Christmas (1974) by Bob Clark
#1
(seen on Criterion)

Time for me to get into the Christmas spirit, and what better way than this.

Criterion emails me a monthly packet of essays, and this time around it's by women picking their favorite slasher film and telling why (often a mix of horror and fascination) they chose it.  One woman chose this.

A maniac terrorizes a sorority.  One of the sorority sisters is Margot Kidder.  Early on, the police are reluctant to investigate a missing girl.  But then Lt. Ken Fuller (John Saxon) realizes something's rotten in Denmark and leads an investigation.  No big surprises here, but it's really well done, and it set so many tropes for horror movies to come.

There have been two remakes, both trash.  This is considered by many a cult classic.

I keep forgetting how good John Saxon can be.  He comes off so convincing -- professional and cerebral -- in his investigation.

The main star is Olivia Hussey, who played Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (1968) at the tender age of 15 to much acclaim.  She's very good in this.

No sword fights.  But a unicorn fight.  Sort of...
