Live action E1: Cowboy Gospel
This is a redux of the anime ep 1 with Asimov and the Blood Eye. It's reworked to add Faye in right away...but this is not my Faye. As I feared, the actress doesn't capture Faye at all - it's a total revamp of her character and that's extremely disappointing. Despite anime Faye's exploitive sexiness, she had a lot of sass and heart, which isn't carrying over to Daniella's portrayal so far.
Cho is okay as Spike. Mustafa is okay as Jet. But they're both just okay. Not impressed by any of the other actors yet. It all feels very stilted.
The sets and spaceships are okay, and there's plenty of references to the original. They are leaning heavy into Julia already, and have introduced Vicious, who is painfully caricature here. They've added a twist at the end, something that fans of the show are supposed to go 'oooooh' at, but it fell flat on me.
The ultravi is okay - gratuitous blood splats and a lot more Cho Kung Fu - it's merciless but it fails to capture the artsiness of the original while struggling hard in the attempt.
The music in underplayed. There needs to be more. The best part is the credit music, but there's no 'coming next ep' segment, which is also very disappointing.
But there's something empty about it. It's not working. I'm leaning towards calling this a fail. I'm skeptical that'll turn around but I'll watch until Ein appears and then judge.
