I gave in to the hype. I need to be stronger. A couple whose relationship has slipped into the doldrums go on a couples retreat only to find themselves lost in the magical land of Schmigadoon. Everyone acts likes it's the early 1900s and break into song whenever they can. The couple can only leave the land of Schmigadoon if they cross the bridge the brought them to Schmigadoon with the one they love. Cue the music.
The series is six 30 minute episodes long so I plowed through it in an afternoon. There were plenty of songs. There were a lot of references from the two main characters about how they knew they were in a musical and would either try to short circuit the songs or play along with them.
Barry Levinson directs. I've always felt he has had a keen eye for unique set designs and filming but it didn't quite gel in this series.
No sword fights. Plenty of songs. It all kind of goes flat once you get the joke that the couple knows they are in a musical.
