If it makes you feel any better, fencing always shows a tie for third now, giving two bronze medals. We have not fenced for bronze in many years. In the Olympics, we still fence for bronze, everything else, tie for third.
I think it was done purely to give another medal; there is no logistical reason not to fence that bout. The Olympics is having none of that nonsense, however.

In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
