It's almost like a throwback to the isolation themes of 2001. Other longwinded sci-fis that I'd stuff into this sweepingly shallow generalization are Gravity (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=2950), Interstellar (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=3244) & The Martian (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=3537)... also that episode of Twilight Zone (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...6#pid37196) - the one I fell asleep in.
Actually, I've dosed off during all these films, except maybe the Martian. Maybe that's it tho. Maybe it's all about hypersleep.
