2/12/2020 Rio
Because Stacy's birthday is so close to Valentines, we separate the celebrations a little. We had a lovely dinner at Lillian's then over to the Rio for Sinead, all just a short stroll from our bungalow.
Sinead still has her pipes. My lawd. What a range. No one can move from wispy sultry sweetness to powerhouse belting like Sinead. She gives me chills like only my favorite performers can - it's ecstatic. Clad in black, burka and barefoot, she barrelled through her show, with only brief 'thank you, thank you' between songs. Backed by a 5 piece - keys, drums, bass, lead & rhythm guitars. The drummer was a bit slow but the rest were on point. Mid-show she broke it down for a solo acapella tune that brought the entire sold out audience to their feet for a standing ovation. So many songs of steeped in Irish angst and broken-hearted regret. I understand her underpinnings better after two trips to Dublin - that Irish ballad approach to vocals that is so poignant. It's her ballads that I luv the most. The second half of the show delivered a lot of hits off I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, which remains one of those perfect albums for me - every track hits true. Some lady next to me just had to feckin sing along and it was like 'glad you're having fun but don't even try to keep up with Sinead'. She lightened up just prior to Nothing Compares 2 u, singing that she was going to fix her mike (absolutely beautifully, I might add), then later chucking the mikestand and commenting that it was heavy like moving a body, but 'not that I'd know anything about that.' All in all, an extremely tight performance. My only disappointment is that she didn't do any reggae.
Best show of the new decade.
