No, not a time travel movie, but I'm pretty certain it's alternate history.
In their spare time the competitors watch TV, and their favorite show seems to be Wheel of Misfortune. It's pretty much like Wheel of Fortune, except that you lose money rather than make it. And instead of a grand finale where the "winner" vies for a brand new car, he/she actually risks losing their own car.
Oh, and the letters are turned over by Vanta Black.
