A couple months ago I read a story in Fantasy & Science Fiction about this abandoned house in the suburbs. People would break into it and then not be able to get out. They'd step out the front door and find themselves in the living room. They'd exit the back door and end up in the attic. They'd climb out an upper story window and find themselves in the basement. It was all a convoluted trap, engineered by aliens and placed here on Earth.
To what purpose?
I'm glad you asked. There was a room full of shoes. Expensive Nike's, Sauconys, Adidas. All the top-of-the-line shoes with their fancy names. The thing is, these shoes still had feet still in them, rotting. Needless to say, this sort of freaked out the newly trapped humans. Periodically a ghostly alien would appear and start sawing at one of their ankles (they were rendered immobile during the operation). Yes, the aliens were fascinated by our shoes, and they had set this trap simply to collect more and more of them.
Right after reading this story, I wandered onto DOOM, and wouldn't you know it, we were having another "shoe ad" flare-up. Makes you wonder.
So, DM, someone beat me to the shoelace.
