There's several companies that distribute Acai in our area. It's been pushed a lot at shows for tha past few summers, similar to how Guarana was marketed about a decade ago. Guarana gives a decent rush for about an hour, but the crash is pretty hard, a lot like a big sugar crash. I'm not into Guarana.
As for Acai, I haven't felt any significant rush attached to it. It's tasty though, sort of like a blueberry that's not sweet. I've had it as an extract and more commonly, as a mixed smoothie sort of thing. I do feel better after drinking these, but no more better than I feel after drinking a nice fruit smoothie. I like Acai. I think NY Times is just trying to be sensational - powerful buzz my ass - either that or the marketing is trying to be the next power drink after REdbull's success.
