I buried Redbell in my mom's yard, in a nice sunny spot on Tara's recommendation. She joins many of my companions from childhood there, along with a dog my mom inherited when one of her friends passed many years ago. I left work early - they were very understanding. It was brutally sunny in Sunnyvale and the dirt was rock solid only a few inches deep requiring repeated soakings with the hose. I let Redbell enjoy the sun for one last moment, then added a rose and a fare thee well card that Stacy picked up at Levi's, and then committed her back to the earth.
We are all shaken by the suddenness of her passing. Poor Tara is doing her best to forge on alone in Mexico. It was one of my fears for her on this trip that one of our pets might pass. Being present with her as she said 'I love you' through her tears to Redbell over Skype as she took her last breaths will be a moment of heartbreak that I will never forget
