The problem with seeing films like this late in the game is that everyone pumps it up and raises my expectations too high. It was funny, sure, and very visual, but it didn't blow me away as much as it has others. I enjoyed the chemistry of the guardians a lot. Bautista is at his best for sure. And Zoe is better when she's covered by special effects. It had that Marvel rhythm which I do enjoy watching at the time, but forget right after seeing it and then get annoyed at the general neurosis of U.S. superheroes. Neurotic superheroes are silly to me. Although I confess, I'm not familiar with this story line at all, so it was amusing to see some characters that were fresh for me.
S started watching it but got sleepy and went to bed just a short way in. She hates superhero movies. T loved it. She laughed so hard. She and I got into this 'spot the poach' game. Hey, that villain looks like Darth. And look - he's talking to someone who looks like the Emperor. And that mine looks like the Dark Mark. And Groot is like Chewy, only covered in bark instead of fur. It was all about Groot for her. She squealed with delight at sapling Groot. How much did Vin Diesel get paid to voice Groot? Rocket was good too. I'm always amused when digital characters upstage human actors, just like Yoda and Jar Jar in the Phantom Menace. The barrage of visuals reminded me of PM a lot actually.
