Tsotsi
#1
Tsotsi rocked. Pure and simple.

It was the first movie that I've seen in years that has me thinking about the soundtrack. I almost bought it at the theater, especially to support an independent, but then I remembered I'm only doing trades now and my local Rasputin needs support too. I may pick it up for my next swap. Most of the soundtrack is by Zola, who plays the head gangster. Zola is this huge celebrity in the hell that is Soweto. Remember Ladysmith Black Mambazo (Paul Simon's Graceland)? Zola is the polar opposite. Granted, you all know my music tastes are much different than most of you, but Stacy warned me that it was great music (she saw it right after the Oscars). Of course, most of your music tastes are probably different than Stacy's too. I figured from Stacy's comment it would be more Soweto sound. But since I stopped listening to it, SOuthjWEstTOwnship has evolved to cutting edge Dancehall Rap. I got to get some Zola.

The vision of poverty is intense. I reminded me of Jamaica and India, absolutely hardcore. Gritty. Lots of corregated steel and stray dogs. The setting makes it a great gangster story, reminicent of Harder They Come, but updated for today's edgier sensibilities.

I'll confess that maybe it got me because of the baby. Maybe it was the bug scene. Maybe the dog scene. Maybe it was a very trying day and I needed something to escape into for a few hours - a celluloid world to immerse into. Probably it's that soundtrack. But I was riveted.

I feel like the Queen with two excellent films in a row (although perhaps not as close in a row).
