Lorde
#1
@ Fillmore 9/27/13

If you're not familiar with Lorde, check out Royals. It's her breakout hit.

She's a 16 year old ingenue from New Zealand - no album yet - just an EP - not even any merch at the show as it was a prelude tour (she met with US press and reps throughout her trip). The show wasn't advertised but sold out in minutes. T and I managed to discover Lorde together on her commute to her old school after we moved to the Cruz. We caught Royals and thought 'woah, who was that?' It was great to visit with the 'mo crew again - haven't been up there in over two years. I was really delighted to get such a warm welcome from the old timers and very grateful that they comped my family in and even kicked down a meal ticket. I crossed paths with Lorde on the way in. She struck me as really tall, but I realized later that she had these boots with huge heels. I don't believe she is sixteen. Her voice, her look, her attitude - she's got to be in her early twenties. Maybe it's a NZ thing.

Until the Ribbon Breaks opened. Three guys with synth percussion. Lame. I expect a lot more from my percussionists. I think I could have done what they did by myself (save a short trumpet interlude). And I don't play drums. S retreated to the office to read the Rolling Stone. T and I wandered the halls looking for fillmore posters for bands she knew (we only found a dozen or so).

Ok, now, as you certainly realize as you've read so many of my music reviews, I am a cardholding member to the church of bass worshippers. The truth is I am a bass addict. I love big booming base. So here are three words you will almost never hear me say: too much bass.

The mix was horrid, driving the bass to marrow shaking levels. When Lorde came out, you could barely hear her because of that damn bass. It was ridiculous as she's a stunning vocalist, backed only by drums and a keyboard, and it's so not about the rhythm and bass. It's about her voice. What we could her was sumptuous - she's got that lovely NZ accent and a delightfully playful stage presence. All dressed in black he reminded me a little of Siouxsie with an added wild leonine mane. She's definitely one to listen for, although I don't think she'll achieve the pop stature of Adele or anything like that. She's not quite built to be that kind of diva. But who knows? She's young. I'm looking forward to her album Pure Heroine.

T is going to frame her first first 'mo poster. She's very pleased with it.
