Liar's Autobiography
#2
I'm sure most of us are familiar with the story, but it is amusing to hear it again, from Chapman's perspective. Graham was a genius, an alcoholic and a metrosexual. The film is retold from readings Gra did a few years before his death, reminiscent of Stepping Razor: Red X, but instead of Peter Tosh's meandering audio diary, this is based on Gra's book. The python crew steps up, lending their voice talents to many of the characters. Ironically, Gra's voice is used for the creation of the name Monty Python, as he does some spot on impersonations of the others (best scene in the book IMO). The film moves from different animators and styles, stop motion, South Park like flash animation, CGI and other styles. One scene has an almost Gilliam feel - there could have been more of that. There's a great hallucinatory DT scene (best scene in the film IMO); you know how I like hallucinations - as much as sword fights and Bollywood numbers. There's a lot of in-jokes to, in that you really need to know Python as the various skits mentioned serve as touch points in Gra's life. All in all, it drags here and there, but generally satisfying.
