There's this young Chinese woman who works in a restaurant run by her whole family. I get the impression it's a sushi restaurant. Anyway, she's your stereotypical delicate little thing except that her arms don't completely match. It's just barely noticeable at first, but with more encounters (more scenes), it seems to get more pronounced. Essentially, her right arm is hairier and burlier than her left. None of her family seems to take notice. As for me, I notice, and it's always a struggle not to stare. I make a point of looking elsewhere except when she's clearly not looking my way; then I sneak a peek.
There's another thread to the dream. A brilliant detective is looking into some shady dealings at the restaurant, or maybe at several restaurants. Eventually he buys some fish meat, and he breaks it apart into thin slices. On one piece he writes something with ink. This piece he will send to the police. On the other pieces he writes something else, and these he will sneak into the meat supplies of these various restaurants. This is my waking-state rationalization of what is going on. I doubt very much that the actual dream had such clarity of intent.
Anyway, I'm at some gathering that includes the Chinese family that runs the restaurant when their daughter (with the hairy arm) shows up all agitated. I'm watching from a distance as she starts explaining to the family what's going on back at the restaurant. She doesn't speak much; mostly she communicates through hand gestures. Her family understands in an instant, and they're taking whatever action is appropriate. But she catches me looking her way. She thinks I'm trying to understand what's going on (when in fact I was just sneaking a peek at her arm), so she repeats a couple of her gestures; and now I have to openly look, and the difference between her arms is striking. She's looking at me askance, trying to ascertain that I follow, and so I make a little nod. And now she's making all these complicated hand gestures, elaborating further on the situation. And it's not clear to me if she's showing what the police are doing at the restaurant, or whether it's what she typically does at the restaurant only there's now a problem with it. But I keep giving those little nods as if I'm following when in fact I'm just looking openly at that hairy arm. How did it get that way? Might she have lost an arm, and the doctors sewed on a donor arm from some man? Or does her job require more physical use of the right arm, and maybe it gets exposed to hormones that promote hair and muscle growth? Needless to say, I never do find out.
That's my take on the dream, which I suspect was a whole churn of interrelated dreams, none of them making appreciable sense.
