Funny how all these years, dm doesn't really plan to do this show and somehow get pulled in. Odd too, that both Yosemite and the Olympics come up in earlier posts (OSL is always neighboring, so that's not so odd at all). This year, it was the interview with RZA where he said 'you should come out'. So dm did, and dm is glad he did. RtB has tapered back to 3 2-day fests. Dm got there late and RMed it, not wanting to bother with the backstage pass dance w/RZA this year. As soon as he arrived, a dozen MVPD raided the chronic candy booth, which sells pot-flavored lollipops. They suck.
Okay, seriously, they do suck. You'd have to suck back like 3 dozen of them before copping any sort of buzz and they taste as much like pot as grape kool-aid tastes like grapes. But still, it was a dramatic bust, exacerbated by dozens of patrons trying to film it on their cell phones. Big brother is really the iPhone. The event was heavily sponsored by Man with the Iron Fists, which is why dm interviewed RZA and why he's glad he went. There were posters, vinyl signs and trailers, and everyone got these cute MwtIF fans. Dm was taking a photo of a vinyl sign when the new RM director and a former SLA supervisor walked by. They asked if dm wanted it, which he really didn't but said 'sure' just to see what would happen, and then, borrowing dm's handy new leatherman, they gut it down and rolled it up for dm to take. Dm will hang it in the front office later. A friend of dm's is the founder of the Hip Hop Chess Federation, which is all about the confluence of hip hop, chess and martial arts. It's very Wu. They had a booth, so dm spent more time hanging out with them than w/Rm, which was great fun to talk politics, community, youth issues, and how to save the world, made even more fun when RZA dropped by to play two simultaneous games. He won both. Dm mostly hung out at the Paid Dues stage where caught Zion I, who sounds like they always do. Also caught Murs, Deltron and Immortal Technique. Deltron was cool as it boasted a horn section, a real drummer and real back-up singers. It would have been much better if they abandoned the turntables and mixers - like acoustic hip hop, if that makes any sense at all. Dm cut out as soon as the show was over because he had to get up early to make his flight to Vegas...
