One Piece

This is a famous anime that I’ve never watched before so I don’t know how it’s supposed to go. But the first ep was fun. It’s hammy and absurd with good anime sensibilities. It’s also decent cgi for tv (although keep in mind that I’m watching on a much smaller screen now and my eyes are fading). That being said, I found it entertaining. I like the characters, even the punk main protag Leffy who like many anime leads is a punk. But the swordsman with 3 katanas and the gal with the telescopic staff are cool. And the fight scenes are fun in that anime way.

I’ll watch more. But it’s way too early to say if it’s D00M worthy. Plus I’ll certainly defer to anyone who might know the anime (but I suspect none of you do).

Two more eps in and still enjoying it. It’s the first anime to live action that has worked (unless you consider Rebels anime - I don’t - but the Rebels > Ashoka thing just can’t be denied.) something about the way this show is contracted allows me to just accept the craziness of this world without questioning. Maybe it’s that anime attitude which is captured well here.

Note that Zoro (the character that carries 3 katanas and makes that work) is played by Makenyu, the real life karate practitioner and son of Sonny Chiba. I luv his character.

As the crew encounters pirate captains, there’s this moment when their wanted poster is shown. It’s a funny motif. There are many pirate adversaries.

E2 is the clown pirate Buggy. He’s like the Joker but anime for this. Then there’s a pirate Capt that’s part saw-toothed nose. Both villains have weird noses. Maybe that’s a thing with this show.

I should watch some eps of the original anime.

Still watching. Still entertained. There’s some fine world building, engaging characters, and good fights, as long as you can buy into that tongue-in-cheek anime vibe. Luffy is nailing the lead, so innocent and full of optimism. It’s all about following your dream. Kitchy but it’s working for this. It’s got to be one of the best translations of anime to live action yet. I know I sorta said that last time but my assertion is more convinced now.

E4 is about an heiress to a shipyard (pirates need a ship) and Zoro’s backstory which explains the three katana thing. Plus they pick up another crew member - like the classic tale of the peach boy (or Wozard of Oz) this has that theme of assembling the squad while on the quest. It also echos Journey to the West as Monkey D. Luffy is parallel to Sun Wukong in acquiring powers by eating a stolen magic fruit, shape shifting, cockiness, and general attitude.

E5 has the best swordfight so far - Zoro v Mihawk - it’s delightful. My fav ep so far. If you’re only going to watch one ep, this is the one. Won’t make a lick of sense out of context, but it might not matter.

E6 goes on an obtuse tangent to introduce the backstory of new character and it had a heartfelt gruesome twist I didn’t see coming at all. Then there’s a major betrayal

2 more eps to go. Maybe tomorrow night. I’m sure it’ll end with a cliffhanger. Every ep so far has ended so. They won’t change the formula for the season finale. If anything, they’ll up the cliffhanger ante for s2.

This has been an international smash hit for Netflix. I’ll have to watch some of the original anime after I finish s1.

Caught the first half of the first episode last night just to see what it was like. I was afraid it was going to be too cutesy. It was not. It has some stuff going on. Probably will watch the rest of Ep01 tonight.

E7 got intense. Surprisingly emotional for a moment. Another backstory revelation but for Nami.
E8 stuck the landing. A grand season finale that ended on an astonishingly sweet note. I rather enjoyed the whole series. It was good fun. Bravo!

I watched the first ep of the anime. It’s got that classic exaggerated expression anime style. Luffy, Koby & Nami, plus a tease of Soro, appear and man, did the live action nail Koby. The live action follows the 1st anime ep fairly well. Eps are 25 mins, but damn, there’s a lot. The series started in 1999 and is still going. It has over 1K eps. Way too much to engage for me right now. I may check in for a few key eps but the bottom line is that there’s an insane amount of story.

But back to the live action - totally D00M recommended.

Concluded Ep01 and started Ep02. It's still a bit too goofy but the action sequences are well done. I'm enjoying the Pirate Clown in Ep02

The Pirate Clown's story arc gets even better as the show goes.

And yeah, it's totally goofy. It's based on the biggest manga and anime ever. Such is the genre.

It's all about Nami & Zoro for me. And Zoro is the son of someone I had you interview long ago, as aforementioned.

Sonny Chiba's son! I should pay more attention when you are dropping knowledge. Or not.

I do like Nami and Zoro.

Yup. He was in Rurouni Kenshin too http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=6412
I was watching him and thinking, dang, this kid's got some moves.

I find it a bold choice that the cast is so diverse and that Mackenyu is the only Japanese in the cast. I was a tad annoyed by the fishmen all being black. I get the analogy they're trying to make, but it reminds me of the ST: TNG Klingon casting.

But yeah, Mackenyu is someone to watch. Hopefully he'll break out of live action anime roles and do like a traditional jidaigeki because I think he'd rock that. If not, well, he's good in these live action animes too. He's been in several now.

Ep03 Still annoyed by Luffy but not a game breaker. I think the wimpy marine annoys me more. I do like the snail phones. I knew all the beats of the buying the boat story once they got to the mansion and found the unwell heiress. I do like Zorro and Numi. And yes, another cliff hanger ending. Why is the accountant a sheep? Glad to see more clown.

Annoying main protagonists are common in anime (can’t speak for manga because I’ve only read a few). Luffy gets a little better over time. And the clown runs throughout the 1st season - he gets better too - funnier.

Note that it’s Zoro not Zorro - that’s an artifact of the Japanese transliteration methinks.

I saw that in your post for the spelling. Couldn't be arsed to change it.
