Just got this email out of the blue from John Barrett:

Quote:Dear friends, family and colleagues,
Hello!
I hope you'll forgive me for the impersonal nature of a mass e-mail. I know there are some of you on this list who I haven't seen for a while, so my apologies for this being my "haven't seen you in a while" e-mail, and as you might have guessed it comes with a pitch.
I am excited to invite you all to come to Santa Cruz on January 27 @ 5 PM, to attend a screening of the feature documentary that I am just finishing final work on. It's called Sputnik Mania and here's a bit about it:
Narrated by actor LIEV SCHREIBER, SPUTNIK MANIA tells the dramatic story of the Soviet Union's launch of the world's first satellite, and reveals the unknown story of how America reacted. Initially regarded with wonder and awe, Sputnik was soon seen as a threat and a terrifying giant step closer to nuclear war. SPUTNIK MANIA features a wealth of previously lost film from the 1950s, an extraordinary collection of big name experts and recently declassified footage that reveal why leaders responded in ways that gripped America and the world.
THE INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY ASSOCIATION awarded SPUTNIK MANIA with its IDA ABCNEWS Award for Best Use of News Footage in a Documentary. SPUTNIK MANIA was honored at the IDA Awards Gala, which took place on December 7, 2007 in Los Angeles. David Sheehan, Director of ABCNEWS VideoSource said: “David Hoffman is one of the true masters of documentary filmmaking, and the skill and artistry with which he uses archival imagery to construct SPUTNIK MANIA brings the story of Sputnik to life with great immediacy, drama and impact.”
You can see a trailer for the film at: http://www.myspace.com/sputnikmania
The screening will be at the Rio theatre here in Santa Cruz: http://www.riotheatre.com/
I co-produced and edited the film, my first feature documentary.
It will open in New York at the IFC center in March and depending on that run, may be released more widely later in the year. This is our big "home town" screening and is a benefit for Spring Hill school, here in Santa Cruz.
Tickets are $10.00 and kids 10 and under get in free. Since it's a benefit for a school, and they're pushing the students to sell tickets, we're not sure what the availability of tickets will be at the door.
If you're planning on attending, please e-mail me back and let me know. I can hold tickets for you and you'll be assured of admittance.
Thanks so much for your attention.
Best regards,
John
