I was wandering around Cannery Row w/my daughter this afternoon. We passed by and heard the music coming from the 6pm show. The sign outside said: "Gunhild Carling - Sweden's Queen of swing". I forgot that I'd seen it mentioned on upcoming event calendars and was curious...it seemed like good music. My daughter said she wasn't interested, so I drove her back home and tried to rally some friends to join, but no one wanted to go, so I went back by myself for the 8pm show. It was Gunhild, her niece (sax, clarinet), daughter (trombone), a guy on sax, a guy on piano, a guy on stand up bass, her husband on one guitar (hiding in the corner which was weird), a Django gypsy guitar guy, and then her son on drums. It was much like this:
In addition to singing, Gunhild plays everything: trumpet, trombone, recorder, harmonica, ukulele, but it wasn't until the second to last song, when she brought out the pipes and played amazing grace, swing style that I figured out that I'd seen her on the YouTube before:
Pretty amazing family, I was impressed.

We must keep our ears open for the next time she plays Monterey. I’m totally smitten with what she brings to the stage. Absolutely wicked with anything brass and jazz bagpipes are something I didn’t know I was missing jn my life.

Swedish musical sensation Gunhild Carling is an internationally acclaimed superstar whose show is a can’t-miss event! Whether she’s singing favorite swinging jazz standards, playing one of the 11 many instruments (trumpet, trombone, harmonica, oboe, harp, flute, recorder, or jazz bagpipe!) or juggling and tap dancing, Gunhild’s sublime showmanship shines. And just wait for the finale – spoiler alert – she plays three trumpets at once!
Carling competed as a celebrity dancer in Let’s Dance 2014, was featured on Sweden’s Dancing with The Stars, performed for Sweden’s Got Talent in 2017 and America’s Got Talent in 2019. She recently performed with her ‘Carling Big Band’ at the Royal Palace in Stockholm in the celebration for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Ruby Jubilee. Performing such great memorable vintage songs such as “Minnie the Moocher,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “All of Me,” “It Had to Be You,” and an endless repertoire of songs, Gunhild masterfully takes you back to another era like a time machine.
Gunhild Carling – Vocals, Trumpet; Band Members – TBD
