Kurosawa’s first directorial film. I saw this years ago and was underwhelmed. But I didn’t Knox’s (or remember) that this film was severely edited due to WWII stipulations and a lot of the original full length movie was lost. So it’s held together with moments of text blocks, explaining what was missing.
A judo champ rises out of Jujitsu. The new form judo is challenged by the old guard but a young unstoppable judoka throws down the way by demolishing any challengers.
It’s still underwhelming but the roots of Kurosawa’s style is evident. He has always moved the camera well, right from the start, and has an eye for building tension for his fights. Good stuff but only for the Kurosawa fanboys (like me). Not D00M recommeded uunless you’re a fanboy too.
