Another in my Donnie binge. The Donnie v Jet fight remains a masterpiece. Zhang Yimou leveled up the rain fight. This remains the artsiest Kung Fu film ever. The color schemes in the Rashomon-like views of the calligraphy school are magnificently overdone to the point of high art. Maggie v Z is so ridiculous with the leaf attacks but oh so sumptuous. And Maggie v Jet is compelling for that huge number of soldiers forming the ring.
The opening fight grabs attention, and then the rest of the film wanders off into Zhang’s artsy absurdity, but it still works for me, perhaps now more so than it did before.
Still D00M recommended.
