This stars Hiroyuki Sanada, with Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy so I started it but then got distracted by my Donnie binge and came back for the ending. It’s about Life photographer W. Eugene Smith (Depp) trying to document the mercury poisoning tragedy in Minamata. Depp plays Gene as a has been war photographer alcoholic and like usual, he over acts it to the point of caricature, completely ruining an important tale of modern day industrial pollution catastrophes. Nighy is the editor I wish I was - a hard nosed boss that demands results and gets them. Sanada is a local protestor who gets bitch slapped - a minor role.
The intriguing part is it looks like the poisoning victims are real. Either that or the prosthetics maker is a wizard. That’s intense because the deformities are severe. For the end credits, B&W pix of global industrial disasters are shown and those hit hard.
This could’ve been great but Depp’s drunk asshole act spoiled it.
