BJ Novak plays a New York writer desperate to start a podcast. Abilene Shaw is a girl he hooked up with and has died in Texas. Abilene's family think Ben was the love of Abilene's life and urge him to come to the funeral. He does, in furtherance of his podcast dreams despite not remembering anything about the girl. The Shaw family take him and agree to help him on the podcast. Ty, Abilene's brother wants Ben to help solve what he thinks is the murder of Abilene.
The film works and explores a lot of different levels. The clash between the hipster East Coasters and the flyover states. Being real and being superficial. It seems that every time Ben tries to be condescending, he gets called on it. My favorite is a talk about Chekov's Gun. As Ben delves further into the life of the Shaw's, he starts to really like them and care for them.
There are a lot of good discussions about modern culture that I thought spot on. It was occasionally very funny. Plus there are a couple of really good twists there at the end.
I enjoyed it. Not a lot of action. Lots of talking about ideas.
