Channing Tatum is PTSD riddled Army Ranger tasked with bringing a former Army Dog that has issues of her own from Portland to Nogales in order for the dog to attend her former handler's funeral. Mishaps occur.
From the trailers you would think this would be a light hearted comedy as Channing tries to bond with the dog Lulu who does not want to bond, but it's almost the opposite of that. There are some funny moments in the movie, but the story is pretty dark. Tatum has issues of his own. He's about an inch away from being homeless himself as he struggles with his own time in the military. A lot of his issues are mirrored in Lulu. There are some clunky goals for Tatum to achieve with Lulu but I'll let it pass. And you know the end will be sad, but the film is good enough that you still feel sad.
I think a lot of the credit for this film goes to Tatum who I think gets overlooked among our current crop of good actors. It might be he is too pretty. But his dramatic scenes in the movie are very effective.
If you want a downer dog movie, this is the one for you. Although, there is redemption in the end.

As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
