I must be softening in my old age. I used to detest French films. Now I kinda like them.
This is actually a Brit indie comedy but it’s set in France with French actors and French sensibilities. Ciaran Hinds plays a loner in a fiat driving about the countryside having quirky encounters. It’s quaint, beautiful, ironic, and very train of thought. Hinds has a perpetual WTH? expression as he eavesdrops and spies a parade of odd characters with randomly intertwining stories.
Hinds never says a word. Some others have lines and make speeches but only occasionally. It’s that French ‘arte’ of pantomime. There’s a lot of absurd that doesn’t quite go anywhere but it doesn’t ask much of the audience beyond tagging along.
For a fleeting moment, the damp man reminded me of cf and I pondered if he’d like this. I suspect tQ & PPFY will hate it. No telling what the rest of you might think. Stacy enjoyed it immensely and recommended I watch it. I spent the first half wondering wth was going on and where was this all headed, but inevitably surrendered to its aesthetic charm and let it wash over me like a chocolat eclair and a flute of champagne. The tone and pacing was pleasant and ultimately I was amused by its dalliances.
Not D00M recommended except for tQ just so she’ll reject any DM recommendations from here going forward.
