The Lady (2011)
#1
Another Michelle Yeoh research binge. This has been in my queue forever and I finally got around to it. It's a biopic of Aang San Suu Kyi, whose story I only knew of marginally when she got the Nobel. This filled in many gaps, albeit fictionally.

Stacy's stepmom is from Burma. It has always struck me as a strange place.

This was directed by Luc Besson, which is extraordinary because I've only thought of him as Euro action thrillers. Apart from the early assassination scene of Suu's father, this doesn't feel like a Besson film at all.

It's a tour de force for Yeoh. She gets full range to show off her acting chops in an epic love story, an inspiring tragic tale of patriotism and freedom. Shot in Thailand because Burma is still really messed up, it captures tropical Asia. Suu's husband was an Oxford scholar and this was initially inspired by his story and how he secured the Nobel prize, but Michelle brought the story back to Suu with that regal grace so typical of her characters. It was all very moving.

HP factor 1 - Lupin as Suu's hubby. MCU factor 1 - Wong. There's an uncredited cameo of Mark Rylance.

Not particularly D00M recommended save for us Michelle fanboys and those that like period historical films.
