Midnight Mass
#1
From the people who brought you The Haunting of Hill House here comes Midnight Mass. Start with a man full of a regrets for having killed a woman while driving drunk. Thrown in a New England island town that's on the verge of collapse due to economics and an oil spill that ruined the fishing grounds, and finally send in a priest to replace their beloved monsignor. Add in a dash of spooky things flying over the town.

It's moody and dark. There are a lot angry undercurrents between the town members. Also, the Sheriff is a Muslim in a predominantly catholic town. It's all fun. S1Ep1 is mostly about the drunk getting out of jail and returning to the Island. The new priest also shows up and there is something off about him. S1Ep2 includes more weirdness. You get more of the characters backstories. And one big weird event that has the mayor acting like the mayor from Jaws.

I'm enjoying it more than tQ at this point.

tQ and I fell back into this one last night. We saw Eps 3 and 4. The show is really good and really terrible. It has some great scenes that are just gut wrenching and emotional interspersed with ten minute long scenes of discussions about where you go when you die. I'm still in. Ep4 ended on a cliff hanger and I want to know what happens. I guessed one of the big secrets straight off.

Ep5 and Ep6. Ep5 had a great resolution to the cliffhanger in Ep4. There is still way too much talking. The Writer-Director has things he wants to say and he is going to take as long as it takes to make those points. So much talky-talky. But then there are just some absolute brilliant moments where everything is so twisted an evil. The whole show revolves around a priest in a catholic church so the way it twists the liturgy to make everything okay is bonkers. In an earlier time, I'm sure the Catholic Church would be looking to ban this show for the liberties it takes.

Ep6 ends on another cliff hanger which surprised me since I thought it was only going to be six episodes. Fortunately, it's a seven episode series. We'll be watching tonight to see if everything is made better or not.

Like i said the show has great moments and terrible moments. So, I'm going to recommend and not recommend this show.

Ep7 was the wrap up, what you do after everything has gone to hell. And the final scenes on the island are still literally hell. Lots more talking about religion and death. One scene is even the same scene from Ep6.

All and all, the show is long winded. It's not that scary. There are a few great scenes. But a lot of the show plods along.
