When we went to Costa Rica for our honeymoon, there were caimen. We took this crazy jungle cruize boat ride to one of the places we stayed and saw a ton of them on the way there. Then when we got there, there was these monster spiders with a legspan wider than your face tucked in the roof corners and on the aerials. We were excited to explore as soon as we got our room and dropped our stuff. They directed us to a short trail near the complex with a warning to be careful but we were on the trail before we thought about it. It went by the riverside and at one point, we saw more caimen on the bank across the river. Like a lot more. Big ones. We were all like 'cool! caimen!' until I came across a caimen-like log on our side of the river and was startled. And then there was the grim realization that there was really nothing between our trail and all those caimen across the river except the river, which is not an impediment for a caimen. We scurried back to the compound immediately.
In the rainforest, we are food.
