Bong Joon-Ho rocks. I’m eager to see this. Is it a big screen experience or can I wait until it pops up on a streamer?

It looks great, but it's mostly about character so I think small screen could work just as well. Ruffalo's false teeth are scary on the big screen

Copy that. Good to know.

Hold the phone. You didn't recognize Patterson? He was Batman. Cedric (HP factor 1). Did you miss the whole Twilight saga?*
* I have never watched a whole Twilight movie all the way through. I've been thinking I should someday but I still haven't gotten around to it.

I was so excited for this I almost made the trek to Oakhurst to see it when it came out. But things came up. Finally, it appeared on HBO Max.
Bong Joon Ho directs the story of Mickey who signs up for an interstellar expedition to the new planet of Niflheim. His job is to die over and over again for the sake of the crew. Orson Scott Card explored similar story themes back before he went to crazy town. The rule is you can only have one printed version of a person at a time. It breaks a fundamental religious law. Naturally at some point, this law gets broken.
The story wasn't very compelling. Mickey 17 isn't a very compelling guy. There was nothing in his character to root for. The characters around him were equally awful. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Colette play a terrible religious couple leading the expedition. Mickey has two women chasing him and they aren't great.
I should have known from the lack of chatter after the movie came out that this wasn't going to be very good.

I enjoyed this. It was no Parasite. More along the level of Okja or Snowpiercer. Once again, Bong takes on class politics and Ruffalo does a good Trump without being too obvious. As per usual, Bong plants tongue firmly in cheek using sci-fi metaphors for his observant parodies. It was a strong role for Pattinson as he embued 17 and 18 with different qualities distinct from Batman & Cedric. And it was nice to see Jannah again - the 1st black female Star Wars character vanished was so quickly forgotten by the non-PoC galaxy. Collette’s obsession with sauce reminded me of the fancy pots of jam in Six Degrees of Separation, which also addressed class. Bong has a layered vibe to his work, easy to dismiss yet quirky funny when revealed.
Seen on Amazon Prime.
