Black Adam (2022)
#1
Someone had to hop on this grenade so I took one for the team. And oddly enough, against my usual hate policy, I kind of enjoyed this.

Look, despite my recent travails, I think my brain is working just fine and you don't have to send in the intervention team to do a welfare check.

The film was just kind of pleasing. There were all these big action sequences with guns and explosions and destruction. Sadly, most of them were in the trailer. But it was good to see how they tied together. There were lots of quips. There were echoes of Terminator 2 with the young kid trying to teach Black Adam how to be a super hero. There were echoes of Wakanda with a little country that had the only source of a super material called Etherium. Unlike Wakanda, Colonizers had come in and taken over the country for the material resources. They also had a super team called the Justice Society complete with a rookie member, Atom Smasher, learning their ropes and thrilled to be there much like the flash in the Justice League movies. Atom Smasher was taking over from his Uncle which was one of the really fun cameos in the movie. So, yeah, derivative.

But the Rock seemed to try a little acting and not just be the Rock in a different costume. He wasn't his quippy self. I enjoyed the Justice Society Members. the story was great but it kept me engaged. There were a lot of tie-ins to the big DC realm. They say SHAZAM a lot. The young man has a room dedicated to DC super heroes. And there is that not so super secret cameo in the end credit scene.

There was a lot of exposition as the movie had to get everyone up to speed on the backstory. But it moved. There were a few surprises. So, yes, I kind of enjoyed it. It's not highly recommended but it has its moments including the funniest moment I have seen in a super hero movie. I laughed out loud.

Your eyes are connected to your brain. In fact, retinal cells are just long brain cells with one end in your retina and the other end in your brain.

I do want to see this because it was so connected to Den of Geek at SDCC. I feel I must just to get closure. Plus you know how I stand with DC... even though I don't have a feckin clue about Black Adam...

Yep. This movie is the first I heard of him. He ties into the Shazam wizards only they used the Egyptian Gods to spell out Shazam instead of the Greek ones.

Seen.

I gotta say something I never thought I’d say. Greg - your glaucoma meds are better than mine. You kinda enjoyed this? I kept wanting this to be good. It’s connected to Den. It’s super inclusive. But it’s a big mess of a film.

It poached from every big blockbuster you can think of. There’s a grat drinking game in calling out what scene was lifted from where.

It’s very visual. I confess, I was only half watching as I my printer decided to fuk with me while making lammies. And I was doing my cut and some painting (glow in the dark for extra fun) so I was only paying half attention but I don’t think I missed anything critical. I liked the funny bits - the rock is best when he’s funny. Good role for Brosnan too.

It’s one of those films that would go great projected on a warehouse with a fat edm soundtrack and a head full of molly.

I got my closure. Ready for SDCC 2023

Not D00M recommended but it might be worth it just for discussions sake here.
