It starts off with a demonstration about missing indigenous women in Canada and why haven't the police done anything about it? It then switches gear to a truly horrible women who ends up getting murdered. At the center of both stories is Alfred Molina as Inspector Gamache. As punishment for interfering in the demonstration, Gamache is sent to the hinterlands of Canada to the titular town of Three Pines to work on the mystery of the dead woman. Fortunately the dissappearance of the indigenous woman is close to Three Pines.
So far it's a solid police procedural. Molina is good as the savvy but empathetic police inspector know for saving people. He is surrounded by a trio of fun police officers. And the town members are all sketchy. You can tell this is a Canadian Story because there is a curling match at the center of it.
I'm going to say watch this if you need a police procedural in your life.

Fair Warning to the Yeti. At one point, one of Gamache's friends gifts him a bottle of Whiskey and says "Don't worry. There's no peat in it"

I’ll never look at Alfred Molina the same again.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

Ep02 is a finally of sorts. The main mystery for which Garmache went to Three pines for comes to a conclusion. It seemed to resolve too quickly, I think. But there are some good bits. I do like the the third investigator rookie who they brought in to help. She's like a giant puppy. At the end of the episode, I thought the show might be over despite the fact the main mystery was not solved. I checked the trailer and there were scenes in the trailer that were not in the two episodes I saw. I will continue watching despite Molina's peat aversion.

I guess they are releasing these episodes two at a time which is good because after seeing episode 03, I really wanted to see Episode 04
Ep03 starts with the older residents heading out to the Indian School (former home of the murder victim of the previous episodes) where they find the younger residents of three pines having a bit of satanic get together with booze and Ouija boards. The elders split up to search the house/school and while separated one of them vanishes. Gamarche is brought in to locate the missing man. He is still in the dog house with his boss and this is a bit of a punishment detail.
Meanwhile they Gamarche and his squad are still tracking down the missing indian girl from the nearby reservation. Gamarche keeps having nightmares about the girl and one gave a really good jump scare.
Ep04 wraps up the case. So far the cases last two one hour episodes. There is a lot of misdirection about the whodunnit but it seemed pretty clear about who did it, although I didn't guess the motivation. Still pretty good stuff. The biggest weakness for me is I've seen too many police procedurals and these people abuse those procedures all the time. They don't spend a lot of time getting warrants (do they do that in Canada?) or calling in help.

Ep05 and Ep06 A hotel murder mystery. Everyone has come for the reading of the will to find out who gets the hotel. Naturally the inspector is already there celebrating his own anniversary. Of course murder happens. Yes, everyone is a suspect. Yes, some of the people from Three pines are there to hear the reading of the will. The whole family is terrible, of course. It's kind of twisty. Everyone is a suspect for awhile. Meanwhile the hunt for the missing Indian Girl moves. The main suspect calls in and wants a meeting. He offers a few more details about the case. But it all goes wrong in the end.

Ep07 and Ep08 Well, we finally found out who killed the Missing Indian Girl. We did find out who killed the guy hung in the forest but then we went headlong into cliffhanger town. Two big cliffhangers and I don't know if those were the final episodes of the season. If they are, I'm going to be grumpy. Well, I'm always grumpy. This will just add fuel to the fire. I am going to be so warm, which is why I sweat under the one cover while the Queen is freezing under three blankets.

Finished ep 2. It feels like a Tony Hillerman story, but set in snowy Canada, like a cross between Twin Peaks and Skinwalkers. I don't like some of the writing. It seems a little forced, or as Greg says, resolves a little too quickly/easily. Also, the pace is a bit slow. We'll see if I stick with it...
