Extreme Job (2019)

This is South Korea's biggest grossing film ever. It's an action comedy. I even rented it (off Amazon - gonna right that off my taxes, I am).

It's another cop tale and given that this is my third K-police procedural in 2 nights, the formula is translucent. An veteran squad leader who's looking at his last big bust before retiring from a career of regret, a psycho-newbie who's young, dumb and full of...feist, a kick ass hottie, a decent yet awkward cop who's crushing on the hottie, and a tech guy. They sqaud gets sent on a snipe hunt that leads to a major bust. The twist here is that their undercover disguise is as a fried chicken joint. And the joint takes off.

It's funny if you like K-humor. I find it a bit whiny and sarcastic but it can work with the right cast. Some of this worked on me, some of it fell flat. It did deliver one lol moment with a repeated theme of car crashes. Honestly, I wasn't overwhelmed given it's success rep - if I hadn't known about it's box office, I might have had lower expectations and enjoyed it more.

Then there's the ultravi. It's teased throughout the film with odd random fights, few and far between. Then, at the final 15 mins or so, it erupts into a very satisfying finale fight, making good on the promise of the hottie fighting the villianess (cat fight!) and delivering some decent action, albeit with a lot of comic elements. There's a final joke about the leader's nickname 'zombie' that sent this spiralling off the deep end, but is just played for laughs (I think) and discarded.

Tentatively D00M recommended. There are plenty of other K-actioners I'd recommend before this but it's the latest big thing in Korea itself.

Okay, I'll tack this on here, because I can't track down the thread where you mentioned the task of coming up with the best Korean action films.  There's Old Boy, most notable (action-wise) for the hammer scene.  There's the Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance flicks.  There's Train to Busan, which I watched and decided all future zombie movies should be made by the Koreans.  There's Flu, which I thought was one of the best pandemic films.  Not certain how you define "action," whether it needs martial arts.  But Train to Busan and Flu have a lot of action.

I thought I would have more input on this.  Seen a lot of Korean movies.  But I'm not seeing as many of my reviews as I expected when I search Korean.  Maybe I just didn't review them.

My bad...

I already discussed the vengeance trilogy with my editor and while I’ll make a nod to it - the hallway hammer scene - we both felt they were more like thrillers than action films.  I may also give a nod to Train and maybe Snowpiercer and Space Sweepers but they too are borderline zombie or sci-fi dramas.

I did surf your reviews here in particular because I know you have more experience here than me.

I need to check out Flu. Thanks. What platform did you watch that on?

I do have 15 now - more than that even - now it’s filling it down.

I’ve been frustrated with Musa. I can’t find my old review of it here or on Kfm. Maybe I need to watch that again too.

I tracked down my Flu review, if you haven't seen it.

As for where I watched it, I don't know.  I wrote the review on Oct. 31, 2014 (Halloween!), which predates streaming, right?  Likely Netflix, by red envelope.  I'll look around.

Hah, found it on a stream.  Flu seems to be on Prime right now.

Does this count as an action flick? Or just dystopian sci-fi animation? I think ED played this at a DooM gathering at his place (don't know where else I would have seen it...)
