A half-hour award-winning documentary about Frank Wong, an artist who builds dioramas of old Chinatown with astounding detail.
CHSA is featured as they house several of his pieces, which is where I first took notice. CHSA held an exhibit and honored him at a banquet - it's also featured in the doc with a quick cameo from Pam Wong, who I've met.
This is sweet if you know SF Chinatown. I remember my dad taking me there regularly. He'd make the trip to stock up on snacks and comfort foods, and we'd go to Chinese New Year banquets with the family. In my teens, I went with my Kung Fu brothers to see movies and eat. Then when I lived in SF and DC, I went regularly myself, just to explore on my own, see movies, get books, and occassionally meet my crazy aunt, who always just happened to be in a particular bar near Eastwind Books. I went for my last birthday to see CHSA and walk the streets again, seeing all the pandemic changes in process. I've always felt like a tourist there but it remains one of my fav SF hoods.
D00M recommended because you're all coming to CHSA for the Bruce Lee exhibit, right? It'll be running for at least a year and it's only $10 for the opening, so it's not an expensive museum at all (it's not very big - just two exhibit rooms really).
Seen on Kanopy.
