I'm in Indiana right now. And yes, I realize this should probably be posted under Travel. But, I mean, there doesn't seem much point if a movie thread about Slumdog Millionaire is allowed to morph into Old Boy and then into Thirst. Not to mention 13 Assassins suddenly becoming Harakiri. What's up with all that? I leave the state of California and suddenly Doom goes totally schizoid. Isn't anyone policing this place? In high school we had a demerit system. Step out of line and you'd get a demerit and have to spend lunch making spitballs with fellow inmates. The demerit system works. It's a good way to keep unsavory elements in line. Think about it, Mighty Overlord.
I saw Thirst a couple years ago and seem to recall being disappointed in it. Unfortunately, I don't recall why. Yes, I was negligent. I should have reviewed it here the night I watched it. And I suppose I deserve a demerit. (Demerits work, dammit!)
I also saw the original Harakiri, but that was back in the '70s on PBS on an 8-incch black and white TV. I also gained a lot of exposure to Bergman in the same way. That damned knight playing chess with Death and so on. The old gentleman introducing the movies educated me on the proper way to pronounce Harakiri and how it was different from seppuku. He really liked holding forth on such matters. I recall that Harakiri was in black and white, and probably not just because of my B&W TV. And it was slow-moving and viscerally gut-wrenching as things came to a head -- or should I say stomach. It was good exposure for me in my mid-20s to a different kind of filmmaking. And it prepared me (slightly) for my later exposure to Yukio Mishima, one of the most difficult psychosexual terrains one could ever try to traverse.
I now return you to your regular scheduled thread -- whatever this one was.
Oh, I think I missed wishing DM a happy birthday a couple days ago. Belatedly let it be noted.
