They need to make a Fleetwood Mac biopic. From the Peter Green era through the hookups and breakups it is an amazing story of love, hate and survival.
Like DM I'm a huge Lindsay Buckingham fan. His influence and voice were critical to the post-Peter Green success of the band. His solo albums are fantastic and his live show is amazing.
When we were offered free tickets to the Lindsay-less FM show in Oakland I was kind of 'meh'. But free is free and it was a chance to see some friends we hadn't hung out with in a while. The tickets came from a friend of theirs that works for The Warriors (basketball team, not New York street gang) and has connections with TicketMaster or something.
I felt a little better about the show when I learned the replacement guitarists were Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House) and Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers).
Essentially it was a "Greatest Hits" show with 8 of the 11 songs from 'Rumours' plus covers of Crowded House "Don't Dream it's Over" and Tom Petty's "Free Fallin' ".
Even with talented replacements Lindsay's vocals were sorely missed. "The Chain" lacked the anger and venom the song needs to have an emotional impact. The harmonies just didn't work with Neil Finn's more sensitive and vulnerable tone.
This was my third show in a row with no opening band and 55-year old me is digging it. Started at 8:10, over at 10:30. Noice!
The most memorable moment was the emotional tribute to Tom Petty during "Free Fallin' ". A montage of pictures with Tom and Stevie played on the screen and the band faced away from the audience while they played to watch. I know they've done this for every show but you could tell they were mourning a lost friend and I teared up a little. Stevie's vocals were spot-on.
Anyway, no Lindsay but it wasn't awful, just kind of 'meh'.
