Mysterious Object at Noon (Thai -- 2001)
#1
According to the NetFlix description, this film was inspired by the Surrealist storytelling technique known as Exquisite Corpse. And I liked the title, okay? So I had to watch it.

Well, it was a big disappointment. The director roamed the Thai countryside, getting people to add little bits to the thinnest of plots. The plot, as presented in the beginning, consists of a crippled boy being taught at home by a lady teacher, but one day the teacher collapses, and as the crippled boy is trying to revive her, he sees a mysterious object fall out of her dress and roll across the floor.

Okay, people, add to this narrative. What is the object? How did the crippled boy get crippled? Who is his teacher? Could she be an impostor? Maybe the ball was really a strange boy who fell out of the sky. Stuff like that.

It goes nowhere fast. Actually, it goes nowhere slow. Very very slow. Nor did I believe it was modeled on Exquisite Corpse. It's more an experiment in basic storytelling. How do you take a basic idea and "grow" it into a story? Unfortunately, the director didn't find very many people who knew how.

The movie perhaps has ethnographic value, resembling a home movie that shows people in their natural state. But it really isn't entertaining and I doubt I learned a thing from sitting through it.

Not depressing. Not enlightening. Not inspirational. Just not.
