I wrote Dances with Films about the conundrum. I received two replies in response. One from the programming chair and one from the Festival Director.

Thank you for your thoughtful and enthusiastic reply.
 
I would not want you to drop out of any of the other festivals that you submitted to, because I don’t yet know what films will be selected.   There are many films that are in consideration at this point, and we are still reviewing new submissions.

Starting the day with another status change. I was expecting one from Mammoth FF but they pushed their announcement. This one comes from LA. It wasn't due for another two months.

Dear Greg,
Thank you very much for submitting your project to NewFilmmakers Los Angeles.
The selection process for our current programming has now been completed and we are sorry to inform you that your film was not selected. We receive a large number of submissions every season. It has been a great privilege to review them and an amazing confirmation on the global state of independent filmmaking. However, the many good projects also made decisions very hard.
A limited number of projects (approximately 10% of submitted projects) are chosen for presentation based on appeal to the International community and professional industry in Los Angeles and their compatibility with our focus areas in our NFMLA Best of Awards, DocuSlate and the NFMLA InFocus diversity initiative.
Please know that we sincerely hope to travel with you further on this path because we hold your unique vision as a filmmaker in the highest respect, and will continue to value your presence in our community. Our goal as a non-profit organization is to act as a professional and creative resource for important independent filmmakers such as yourself. We hope to help support you in whatever ways we can with the resources available to us.

When I saw who sent this message, I immediately reached for disappointment. Boston isn't supposed to announce for months and I had hopes since they accepted Stro for screening. Turns out it was a just a message to say "Hey, we got your film". Come  on, Boston, don't scare me like that.

Well, if Boston wasn't up to disappointing me, Monmouth sure was. Oddly, Monmouth wasn't the film festival I was supposed to hear from today. But the day is young.

After careful consideration by our programming team, we regret to share that we are not able to include your project in this year’s official lineup. This was not an easy decision, as our team reviewed a strong and diverse pool of submissions, and narrowing it down is always incredibly challenging.
That said, the Monmouth Film Festival is more than just a screening platform, it’s a three-day experience designed for filmmakers at every stage. We’d love for you to still join us May 29–31 at Bell Works in Holmdel, NJ, and be part of the community!
Throughout the weekend, we’ll be hosting networking events and industry mixers, live Q&As and filmmaker conversations, as well as free educational panels and workshops led by working industry professionals.
