I wrote Dances with Films about the conundrum. I received two replies in response. One from the programming chair and one from the Festival Director.
Quote:Hi Greg,
Thank you for your thoughtful and enthusiastic reply.
I would not want you to drop out of any of the other festivals that you submitted to, because I don’t yet know what films will be selected. There are many films that are in consideration at this point, and we are still reviewing new submissions.
We will be in touch soon.
Best,

Beautiful Pocatello, Idaho.
No one is taking shots at me. I get enough of that here.

Don't have to worry about going to Tribeca. While they were deeply engaged in my work, no one in New York actually screened the picture.

Dear Greg,
Thank you sincerely for sharing your work for consideration at this year’s Tribeca Festival. We know how much time, passion, and care goes into making a film, and it was a privilege to consider your project for inclusion in this year’s festival. After careful and thorough review, we unfortunately will not be able to offer an invitation for your film to our 2026 lineup. Please know that this decision was not made lightly. Our team engaged deeply with your film, and we truly value the artistry, voice, and vision you brought to the screen.
Each year, we are fortunate to receive an extraordinary number of submissions, and the process of selecting a limited program from such a strong field is both rewarding and incredibly difficult. While your project was not ultimately selected, we want to express our genuine admiration for your work and hope this will be the beginning—not the end—of a creative relationship.
We warmly encourage you to stay connected with us and consider submitting future projects. It would be an honor to follow your continued journey as a filmmaker.
All our best,
Programming Team

Starting the day with another status change. I was expecting one from Mammoth FF but they pushed their announcement. This one comes from LA. It wasn't due for another two months.

Dear Greg,
Thank you very much for submitting your project to NewFilmmakers Los Angeles.
The selection process for our current programming has now been completed and we are sorry to inform you that your film was not selected. We receive a large number of submissions every season. It has been a great privilege to review them and an amazing confirmation on the global state of independent filmmaking. However, the many good projects also made decisions very hard.
A limited number of projects (approximately 10% of submitted projects) are chosen for presentation based on appeal to the International community and professional industry in Los Angeles and their compatibility with our focus areas in our NFMLA Best of Awards, DocuSlate and the NFMLA InFocus diversity initiative.
Please know that we sincerely hope to travel with you further on this path because we hold your unique vision as a filmmaker in the highest respect, and will continue to value your presence in our community. Our goal as a non-profit organization is to act as a professional and creative resource for important independent filmmakers such as yourself. We hope to help support you in whatever ways we can with the resources available to us.
We would like to thank you for your interest in Newfilmmakers Los Angeles. Should you wish to participate as an attendee, a limited number of seats are available and can be applied for. If you're interested, just let us know.
You can read more at www.NFMLA.org
Otherwise, we sincerely hope to be informed about your future projects and would also like to take this opportunity to wish you much success!
Best,
Bojana Sandic

Sadly, my "script' was not selected for the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival. I can get two free VIP tickets, though.

When I saw who sent this message, I immediately reached for disappointment. Boston isn't supposed to announce for months and I had hopes since they accepted Stro for screening. Turns out it was a just a message to say "Hey, we got your film". Come on, Boston, don't scare me like that.

Hi Greg,
Thank you for submitting your work to the 42nd Annual Boston Film Festival. We truly appreciate the time, creativity, and dedication that went into your film, and we are honored that you chose to share it with us.
All submissions will now enter our official screening process. Our screening committee will carefully review your film to ensure a thoughtful and thorough evaluation. Given the volume of submissions we receive each year, this process may take some time, but please know that every film is given the attention it deserves.
We will be in touch once the screening process is complete to inform you of our decisions and any next steps.
Thank you again for being part of this year’s festival. We wish you the very best and appreciate your contribution to the art of filmmaking.
Cheers,

Well, if Boston wasn't up to disappointing me, Monmouth sure was. Oddly, Monmouth wasn't the film festival I was supposed to hear from today. But the day is young.

Dear Greg,
Thank you for submitting your project to the 2026 Monmouth Film Festival.
After careful consideration by our programming team, we regret to share that we are not able to include your project in this year’s official lineup. This was not an easy decision, as our team reviewed a strong and diverse pool of submissions, and narrowing it down is always incredibly challenging.
That said, the Monmouth Film Festival is more than just a screening platform, it’s a three-day experience designed for filmmakers at every stage. We’d love for you to still join us May 29–31 at Bell Works in Holmdel, NJ, and be part of the community!
Throughout the weekend, we’ll be hosting networking events and industry mixers, live Q&As and filmmaker conversations, as well as free educational panels and workshops led by working industry professionals. It’s a great opportunity to connect, collaborate, and support fellow independent filmmakers, while gaining insight into the craft and business of filmmaking.
We appreciate you sharing your work with us, and we hope to have the opportunity to consider your projects again in the future.
Sincerely,
Monmouth Film Festival

When your rejection card has 10 punches, do you get a free kick in the nuts? I hear there's some training you could do to prepare for that.
